FAQs

  • What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission techniques. It emphasizes leverage, technique, and strategy over brute strength, making it accessible to individuals of all sizes and physical abilities. In BJJ, practitioners learn how to control and submit opponents by applying joint locks and chokeholds, typically on the ground.

The practice of BJJ promotes physical fitness, mental discipline, problem-solving, and a strong sense of camaraderie among its practitioners. It's a martial art that encourages continuous learning and personal growth, both on and off the mats.

  • Can I have a taster session?

Yes, we offer 1 free full taster session per student.

Come down and give it a try, if it's not your cup of tea then there is no loss although we are sure you will love it.

  • What type of payment methods do you accept?

We operate on a per session payment basis, so we only accept cash. This means that you only pay for the sessions you turn up to instead of paying for a monthly membership and feeling like you have missed out when you are unable to attend a session.

  • What is Gi/No-Gi?

A Gi is the traditional uniform worn in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) training and competition. It consists of three main components: a jacket, pants, and a belt. The jacket is typically made of heavy cotton material and has a thick collar, while the pants are similarly constructed from durable fabric.

No-Gi BJJ, on the other hand, is a variant of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu where practitioners wear shorts and a rash guard or tight-fitting athletic shirt instead of the traditional Gi. Unlike the Gi, there are no grips on clothing, making it more reliant on body control, speed, and agility.

  • Do I need a Gi to attend?

No, although it is traditionally worn during training, we offer both Gi and No-Gi training.

  • How do I attend a session?

You can just turn up to one of the timetabled sessions although it is best to contact our head instructor (Nick Doyle) via phone or email so he can answer any other question or queries you may have about the club/session.

Head Coach

Nick Doyle

Nick started training in BJJ back in 2014, under Brenden Flanagan (Black Belt) and Andre Pimenta (3rd degree Black Belt) at bat cave MMA. He has been coaching at the bat cave MMA, which is now Carlson Gracie Bracknell, since 2018. Currently a brown belt instructor, Nick aims to deliver a fun and safe approach to training, focusing on fundamentals of the sport, with a good amount of sparing along side drilling and positional games.
